What is orienteering?  Using a premarked, detailed topographic map (and maybe a compass), find your way to various checkpoints.

We usually offer five courses, and this week we have a beginner lesson:

Beginner lesson:  Please check in at 10:45 so we can start at 11 am.  This will be near or around the parking lot and demonstrate terrain reading, including important orienteering terrain features like:  hills, spurs, reentrants (what are those?), vegetation.  15-30 minutes depending on group size.

White:  Beginner friendly, 20 minutes at full speed, 45-60 minutes walking.  Not much off trail, so attire is flexible.

Yellow:  New person friendly, 25-30 minutes at full speed, 60-90 minutes walking.  Can be slightly off trail, consider long sleeves and long pants

Orange:  Intermediate - larger features, extensively off trail.  If this is your first time, consider warming up with Yellow first.  Running without mistakes is 60-75 minutes, walking is 90-120 minutes.  Pants and long sleeves and shoes you don't mind getting wet recommended.

Green:  Technically difficult.  Small features, well off trail.  Winning running time without mistakes is 55-75 minutes.  Walking may be 120-150 minutes.  Pants and long sleeves and shoes you don't mind getting wet recommended.

Red:  Same technical difficult as Green (i.e. hard), but slightly longer.  Top runners 60-80 minutes, walkers 150-180 minutes.  Pants and long sleeves and shoes you don't mind getting wet recommended.
