What is orienteering?

Using a detailed topographic map, navigate to a series of checkpoints (in order for this event). Race competitively, or enjoy a relaxing nature hike with family or friends - the choice is yours! The route between checkpoints is also your choice - take a longer trail option, or head off cross country across hills and over logs..you decide!

Schedule

4:30 Maps distributed; plan your route.

4:55 Assemble at start for a brief briefing

5:00 Go!

7:00 Stop!

If overtime, expect to lose points quickly, often approximately one checkpoint per partial minute. EG, 2:01:20 = two checkpoints of points lost.

Shortly after course closure, we will award our SMOC Night Owl to the person or team acquiring the most points in the time limit, or in the event of a tie, to the fastest completion of the course.

Course Descriptions

Many of our courses are in a fixed order. However for this event, you can go in any order and find as many as you like. Points will range in difficulty from beginner-friendly through expert, from close to start to far away. If you are new and need help picking a route, let us know and we'll give you some suggestions.

What to wear/bring

Your mileage may vary; you can't go too wrong with this:

  • Lighting source with spare batteries
  • Long pants (potential for ivy off trail)
  • Long sleeves, ideally in orange.
  • Layers for the temp
  • Shoes that can get dirty. Trail running shoes work great (whether you are running or not)
  • Shoes for afterwards in case you find mud or marshes
  • Snacks and water for on the course
  • Insect precautions
  • Ivy precautions

We have loaner compasses if you don't have one.
