Pre registration required. Sign up by Thursday 11 pm to ensure a map. Sign ups after Thursday 11 pm may work as long as we don't run out of maps, and you are patient at check in as we might not have everything packed for you on arrival, as people will have been preparing timing files, printing maps, gathering cookies, etc.

We charge per "start"/group ($10, reduced to $5 for members with coupon code SMOCMEMBER (if you are on the member list here! Not on the list? Join here. If a member of another OUSA club, please use RECIPROCAL), not per person, so if you have extra folks in your party, just have them fill out online waiver. An extra map is another $5. Interested in racing for free? Ask us about volunteer opportunities like flag pickup, giving a lesson, etc.

NOTE: As a DNR park, you'll need the P on your license plate sticker, or similar recreation passport.

What is orienteering?

Using a detailed topographic map, navigate to a series of checkpoints (in order for this event). Race competitively, or enjoy a relaxing nature hike with family or friends - the choice is yours! The route between checkpoints is also your choice - take a longer trail option, or head off cross country across hills and over logs..you decide!

Event will occur rain, snow, sleet, sun, 75 deg, 15 deg, etc.

Past Shenanigans

  • White out zones (blanked portions of the map)
  • Bearing / pace references
  • Dashing through the woods - follow the dashed line and find flags along the line o
  • Mother / child style controls (find a map to a bonus checkpoint at a pre marked checkpoint)
  • Roaming checkpoints
  • "Snow covered" trails missing from map

What to Wear

  • Weather is highly variable; usually we say, long pants and long sleeves; you may also want layers and gloves, hat/buff, etc. Dry clothes and shoes for after the race may come in handy as well. As we get closer, you may wish to test your outfit at your intended exertion level.
  • Trail running shoes work great.
  • We have loaner compasses - if you don't own one, don't buy one, try ours first.
  • Bug/tick spray
